Although Jeep is one of the largest American car brands and home to its largest market there can be few people around the world who does not know the name associated with the SUV. In fact, I would go so far as to say that Jeep is synonymous with Hoover vacuuming or Xerox to photocopying if I may so bold.

Jeep's history goes back some sixty years, which is longer than its only real competitor British Land Rover coming in a close second place for longevity. Most people are aware of the fact that the Jeep was born from the need for the U.S. military to produce a "go to any some "light reconnaissance vehicle weight. The need to produce something quickly was great as the war in Europe was already under way. The role of the Jeep during the Second World War can not be overstated and, indeed, General Dwight D. Jeep Eisenhower was cited as one of the most important tools available to the U.S. Army and was an important contribution to the Allied victory.

It is a fact of life that every day many things we now take for granted were originally developed for use military, including things like satellite navigation without it, where would we be? Who knows how to navigate with a map and compass these days!

My parents have recently moved to a smaller house and, unfortunately, have realized that a lot of garbage that was residing in his loft actually belongs to me. Very skilfully under the guise of an invitation to luncheon I was asked about one of my mother's delicious cooking Sunday roast only to meet a great bunch of my old belongings to sort through. Most of the things I had long forgotten and I was getting bored watching to loads of tacky 80's and 90's elements (with the possible exception of a calendar of Baywatch, so it was a big fan of the Hoff!) Suddenly even found a box of toy cars from childhood. This is more like it, there was a treasure of model cars of the past including a De Tomaso Pantera and a Ferrari 512 BB. Then suddenly, there it was! My old military jeep, looking a bit battered with spare wheel missing, for which my sister blamed the commission of an act of retribution for me after the decapitation of its Barbie dolls.

It's amazing, but sitting there with all those childhood memories coming back to me as I watched my old Jeep. I had not seen for almost thirty years, but as I had this little old gray metal in hand, she was just like Yesterday I was winning the war in Europe (in the backyard of my parents, of course).

Many years later I had an experience with a Jeep I prefer to forget. I was camping with some friends and we were all a little worse for wear the next morning, after a long night of partying, when someone thought it would be fun to start your Jeep V8 next to the store where I was sleeping off a hangover. The result was both deafening and the little weak canvas did little to isolate the noise of this thing that was actually about an inch away from my head. I must admit I thought it was hilarious and after this rude awakening came from my shop to say a few choice words. He managed to make people laugh until the day of "The Story of Jeep" evokes thoughts of happy days.
