Yesterday was the 50th anniversary of Barbie. A celebration of half a century of obsession with girls with a pencil thin, wasp waist, wrist, pointed breasts. It is estimated that over 1 billion Barbie dolls have been sold worldwide in over 150 countries since the doll was first introduced in 1959.
Mattel, maker of Barbie, the claim three Barbies are sold every second.
In his 50 years on the planet, Barbie has enjoyed 100 different careers, had more than 40 pets, including dogs, cats, horses, a panda, a lion cub and a zebra and 73 hectares of clothing, furniture and other equipment and assistance.
Barbie was first of all, a fashion statement (still is, mostly), but with the feminist movement became a career woman. Doctor, Cowgirl, astronaut, military, politics are just a few. In 1994, the Winter Sports Barbie was introduced, with skis, poles, and, of course, dressed in designer clothes slopes. In 1998, Nascar Barbie began to race cars, followed by the WNBA Barbie and Barbie's World Cup. Ultimate soccer player Mia Hamm was selected as the Barbie Football. It was a brief trend.
However, it seemed for a time as Barbie could join the ranks of real women, instead of maintaining natural figure was born (adult) 50 years … 5-foot-11 high, 18 inch waist and hips of 33 inches. When Mattel Barbie redesigned in 1974, was given a slightly waist higher, but still has legs here.
Child experts have denounced the Barbie doll as a bad influence on girls. They say that falling in (or perhaps leading) the stereotype of the thin-is-beautiful ideal that has been foisted on a gullible public by the designers of clothes, Madison Avenue and the media. Ad for everything from clothing to cars to cosmetics feature cane-like, hollow cheeks abandoned children.
But instead of the rebels with anger or laughing heartily at this nonsense, many girls and women concluded that they are far from ideal. Some see themselves as too fat Barbie dolls. They look in the mirror and they see is like a mirror image trick … inaccurate and distorted. This dissatisfaction and distortion can lead to eating disorders.
Women who participate in sports or are physically active are less likely to buy the hype. They see their bodies in healthy ways. Your mirror reveals curves and muscles, strong shoulders and a straight one's dignity, a body prepared to work and play hard.
Where are the dolls in search of physical activity, girls can emulate? Dolls that come with skates, bicycles, water skis. They may have a range of sporting fashionable clothes, hair can be flashy, or stopped in a pony tail or hair out for the party after the game and go with the tennis racquets, volleyball and hockey sticks. Consultancy Others may be tapes, sports stockings and ACE bandages.
Even Barbie above forms, fill in and joins the softball team, maybe you should be expelled out of field. Happy Birthday, Barbie. Now go.
