What a miserable life that I use for lead.
I was a successful executive with a Fortune 500 company. I earned over six figures a year. I had the options stock, preferred stock and any other "golden handcuffs" of corporate America gives its slaves to keep them loyal. We were a family of two cars and had a beautiful home in a wealthy neighborhood. I can hear right now saying, "Give me some of that misery!"
What is not mentioned until now was the feeling of emptiness that was when my eldest daughter asked me if the next day was Saturday. "He asked me that question every night I went to bed because Saturday was the only day of the week we would have family fun.
Monday to Friday would be at my desk in downtown Cincinnati by 6 am, then wait until traffic on motorways subsided after 6 pm, so would have less of a journey. I did not even go into the ridiculousness to participate as an employee of an organization. No matter your title is CEO or mailroom employee, you have to pretend you like to be paid what position of the sentence, not what you're worth.
You also have to pretend you do not miss his family for 50 or more hours per week (excluding time way) is far away.
Most men would never admit that they prefer playing with their Barbie girls who are at work. That is until your child is walking down the aisle at graduation and the macho man himself becomes a second pool to guess every time your child what he called the office to go home and said "I just called a meeting of honey, sorry."
Fortunately I discovered more and stopped before money and "stuff" behind. I went to a faith started a home business. You never have to worry about being at death's door he regrets each the last 40 years that I was not there for my wife and three daughters.
If you're in corporate America and think that this was because the boss only promoted you emailed or glowing. Remember something very important, life is not a dress rehearsal, only get one shot. When you are on your deathbed not ask the tapes and plates, he asks her family.
No matter how many times you get promoted the view never changes – you're always watching the butt of a big ol 'can not choose your boss.
I gave up security for freedom. The most secure in the world are deprived of their liberty. They receive three meals a day, spend some money and a roof over his head. The only problem is they have to give up their freedom, sound familiar?
You have an option. Forty years of working for someone else to build your dream or 2-5 years of building their dream and a life of freedom.
