Australia is a vast country – almost as large as the contiguous United States – and it is impossible to experience everything the country has to offer in a single visit. Some attractions not to be missed. These include both man and natural wonders and the fascinating culture and traditions of the first inhabitants of the country.

Most visitors fly into Sydney, which has one of the most spectacular scenery anywhere in the world. No visit to Australia is complete without seeing one of the wonders of nature – the Great Barrier Reef. It is supposedly the only feature of life on earth visible from the moon. There are several ways to experience the reef – you can navigate around it and fly over it, but to dive in clearwaters is a memorable experience.

Townsville and Port Douglas both make a good base to explore the tropical north, which contains some of the oldest rainforests in the world, as well as a variety of animal life. Take one of the many off-road tours that are available, or see the rainforest Skyrail rainforest cableway, near Cairns.

Located in the north territories of Australia, is the vast Kakadu National Park, a World Heritage sight, covering over 4 million hectares. A favorite activity is the simple observation wildlife and the park has an estimated 75 species of reptiles and 200 species of birds. The park is also one of the few places in Australia where the Los Aboriginal land and live there as much as they have for centuries.

Australian wines are considered some of the best in the world and you can spend the holidays visiting the vineyards and wine sampling. Many people visit the Hunter Valley wine region known because of its proximity to Sydney, but the best region for wine tasting is arguably the Barossa region, a German-speaking area about an hour away from Adelaide.

An activity should not miss is simply knowing the Australian people, who are friendly and outgoing. The language is the same – though it may be confused by the references mysterious things like "Sheilas", "billabongs" and the ever popular "shrimp on the Barbie"!
