Perhaps Captain Pants do not need a Newberry Medal, after all. Instead, Erica S. Perl offers the opinion that books take creative risks that deserve recognition by the ALA for the prestigious Newbery Medal.
Ms. Perl writes that "… choose Newberry conventional books … [it] gives them a fighting chance." Due to the unconventional methods adopted by the author, the possibility of a parent, much less their children, picking up the book and find interest in it is thin, the Newberry Medal book offers "outrageous" the opportunity to spend time in the spotlight. And over time in the spotlight, it makes money.
This Article seems to be more a financial argument that a literary argument – though it may not be obvious at first glance. There are indications that the books are based on non-conventional financial progress made for the reception of the Newberry, but is immediately covered by a mantra of "after his inner muse," to distract the reader to think the real reason the award was created in the first place. Upon receipt of the award, book sales exponentially increase the exposure and stored in libraries across the country, as well as in homes and schools. Well, then what about Captain Underpants or goosebumps? Apparently not enough ALA's art (though the peak of its own Goosebumps story was genius) and most importantly, they are doing well without a nomination for the Newbery Medal. If Good teachers! Sweet Ladies! They should have been omitted from receiving the award, it is likely that in the bargain bin with Barbie: Rapunzel and the If Beard and Casper The Friendly Ghost in Ghostland.
That's really the Newberry Award is based on artistic talent or is used as a means take advantage of the masses unobserving? Is not it obvious? Both.
