Barbie was first produced as a teen model, and basically stayed in that age group. The following essay traces the history of Barbie 1959 to 1963, covering its development, attractive to children, and their existence as a cultural artifact of the period. History: 1959 Barbie Debut In February 1959, Barbie was first introduced Once at the American International Toy Fair in New York (Barbie dolls). Its creators, Ruth and Elliot Handler (co-founder of Mattel) modeled after the German Barbie known as Lilli. Lilli began as a cartoon character in a newspaper called the Bild-Zeitung (billyboy 19).
